Celebrated, local, Cedar Valley residents Scott Cawelti and Gary Kelley are collaborating with the James & Meryl Hearst Center for the Arts to bring you the exciting educational film series entitled “The Power of Movies: Visual & Verbal”. On consecutive Thursday mornings in January from 9:30-11:30 a.m., Cawelti and Kelley will show clips from a pair of films and examine the powerful meanings emerging from the films' pictorial and vocal language.

The first screening is free and open to the public, and the following three screenings are ticketed at $10.00 per session, or three for $25.00 when purchased in advance. Refreshments will be served. Additional parking is available at Lampost Theatre, next to the Hearst Center, on Seerley Boulevard.

Scott Cawelti is a well-known writer and resident from Cedar Falls. A UNI graduate, he received his bachelor's degree in vocal music education, master's degree in English, and a doctorate from the University of Iowa in modern letters. He has been writing opinion columns and reviews for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier since the late 1970s. Cawelti is also an emeritus professor at the University of Northern Iowa, and has taught literature, writing, and film courses. For years, he's played in a folk duo with Robert James Walker and can still be found performing regularly as a singer/songwriter and guitarist. You can hear his musical abilities on his album Landscape Iowa, where he sets sixteen of James Hearst's most beloved poems to original music. Gary Kelley is also a resident from Cedar Falls and a UNI graduate. He received his bachelor's degree in art, and has a studio located in Cedar Falls. He has done illustrations for clients such as The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Playboy, Atlantic Monthly, Time, GQ, CBS Records, the National Football League, and major publishers and advertising agencies. His work has been honored by the New York Society of Illustrators, National Booksellers Association, Print, New York Art Directors Club Show, and the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators among others. He has also had exhibits shown at the James & Meryl Hearst Center for the Arts, and frequently collaborates with other Cedar Valley area artists.
