Trout Stocking Family Day

As the early days of spring begin to warm, it’s a good time to think about going fishing with the kids. On April 20, 2024 the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IA DNR) will be stocking North Prairie Lake in Cedar Falls with trout. And for the occasion, Trout Stocking Family Day was created. It’s a perfect opportunity to practice casting with the kids or introducing them to the joy of catching their first fish.
The annual Trout Stocking Family Day gets underway at 10am when the Iowa DNR (in conjunction with the Cedar Valley Walleye Club, and Cedar Falls Parks Department) releases brown and rainbow trout into North Prairie Lake. As a sponsor, SCHEELS will also be giving away a free tackle bag to the first 50 kids (ages 4-16) who visit the SCHEELS tent.
Also hosting the event is the Cedar Valley Walleye Club and they will be on site to answer questions.
Fishing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with your child(ren). Be patient and enjoy the time with them. Each of them will enjoy a different part of the day spent outdoors. Jason Christie of bassmaster.com put it this way, “…my kids don’t go fishing with me – I go fishing with them. I try to do things on their level.”
Even on a sunny day, the weather in early April can be brisk so be sure to dress in layers. To keep everyone happy, the IA DNR has provided a checklist of supplies and ideas for a day spent fishing with the kids. And parents, don’t forget that you will need to have a valid fishing license and trout stamp. These can be obtained at SCHEELS in Cedar Falls (402 Viking Plaza).
Although the festivities end at 2pm, continue fishing at North Prairie Lake or enjoy a walk on the trail through Prairie Lakes Park (and identify the metal prairie critters along the trail). Or, stop in at the Cedar Falls Visitor Center located up the hill from the lake to browse the brochures in our vestibule which is open 24/7.
