UrbaN Iowa TC By Chad McKinzie Sponsored by The Brass Tap Inside - 421 Main St., Cedar Falls Materials Used Spray paint, acrylic brush paint, and paint markers. The Design (in the Artist's words) "Starting off as a graffiti artist I knew there had to be the organized chaos of splattered paint and some letter bending. As a tattoo artist I wanted to take a traditional approach to a panther on the chest. The combination of these styles create an amazing look that most will appreciate and enjoy." About the Artist Chad, an Iowa native, has led a dynamic artistic journey. After settling in Cedar Falls, he explored various creative paths. He initially studied photography at Hawkeye Community College before delving into welding and boat building in the Quad Cities. He also spent time in Florida, where he immersed in hip-hop culture, influencing his art with an ocean/surfing vibe. Chad's artistic evolution continued as he traveled, painting graffiti art and participating in festivals nationwide. His breakthrough came with "Art in Motion," a gallery show featuring his graffiti art on a train set. This led to numerous mural commissions, including a jungle scene in Cedar Rapids and live painting at festivals like Newbo. Transitioning into tattooing, Chad found a new avenue for his living artwork. After apprenticing under a veteran artist, he returned to the Cedar Valley to pursue his passion further. Today, he owns Friki Tiki Tattoo, where he continues to explore his multifaceted artistic vision. Chad's enthusiasm for public art and community involvement led him to participate in Panthers on Parade, furthering his legacy as an artist deeply connected to his surroundings.
