History

UNI’s roots date back to 1863 when it was originally established as the Civil War Soldier's Orphan Home, later becoming the Iowa State Normal School in 1876, focusing on preparing teachers for Iowa’s public schools. The institution underwent several name changes over the years:

  • In 1909, it was renamed the Iowa State Teacher's College.
  • In 1961, it became the State College of Iowa.
  • In 1967, it officially became the University of Northern Iowa.

The university is composed of five colleges:

  • Wilson College of Business
  • College of Education
  • College of Humanities, Arts & Sciences
  • College of Social & Behavioral Sciences
  • College of Graduate, Research & Online Education (GRO)

Notable surviving buildings from the early days of the university include Lang Hall and the President's Cottage. The first principal of the institution was James Gilchrist, and the first class enrolled just 27 students.

This history and strong academic focus continue to shape UNI's reputation as a respected institution.
