Well, you’re not escaping to a tropical island, but Cedar Falls has its own tropical paradise at the UNI Botanical Center on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.
More than 250 tropical plants fill multiple garden rooms at the the UNI Botanical Center. Orchids, bromeliads, coffee and banana plants, palms, and climbing arums can be found in the orchid house, desert room and a tropical room. There's also a Koi pond.
The botanical center is a teaching center with a classroom and greenhouse lab for the biology department. For the public, the lab and classroom are available for meetings and events.
The UNI Botanical Center is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm for self-guided tours (free of charge). Bring your lunch or snack, find a bench and enjoy a well-deserved break from the cold and wind. Be sure to check their calendar in April for the date of their Annual Spring Plant sale. For information about the sale and to confirm their hours on the day you visit, contact the botanical center at 319-273-2247.
Interested in more information about the botanical center? Visit their website and view their virtual tour and photo gallery.
Interested in additional Things to Do and Places to Stay or Places to Eat & Drink? Contact the Cedar Falls Visitor Center at 800-845-1955 or stop in at 6510 Hudson Road. The visitor center is open seven days a week!
